One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law in July 2025, makes significant changes to federal student loan programs that will take effect July 1, 2026. There will be updated annual and lifetime borrowing limits for federal loans, and the Graduate PLUS Loan program will be eliminated for new borrowers. OBBBA also requires prorated loan limits for students enrolled less than full-time, and updates repayment plan options for loans first disbursed after July 1, 2026. Legacy provisions allow students with federal loans disbursed before July 1, 2026, to borrow under current rules for a limited time.
